보건 전문가 “브라질 상황 갈 길 멀어…매우 우려스럽다”

세계보건기구 산하 범미보건기구(PAHO)는 오는 8월 초까지 브라질의 코로나19 사망자가 8만 명을 훌쩍 넘어설 것으로 예상했습니다.

이런 가운데 브라질의 한 주지사가 코로나19 대응에 써야 할 공공 자금을 부정하게 사용한 혐의로 경찰로부터 압수수색을 받았습니다.

말라리아 치료제인 하이드록시클로로퀸의 사용 여부를 두고 브라질에서 일고 있는 논란도 여전히 뜨겁습니다.

리우 데 자네이루 주지사의 자택에 대한 브라질 연방 경찰의 전격적인 압수수색이 이뤄지고 있습니다.

코로나19 확산 방지에 사용돼야 할 공공 자금이 부정하게 사용됐다는 의혹이 일었기 때문입니다.

브라질 연방 경찰은 코로나19 치료를 위해 긴급 설치된 병원과 주지사 사이에 검은 커넥션이 있다고 보고 집중 조사하고 있습니다.

이런 가운데 세계보건기구(WHO) 산하 범미보건기구가 브라질의 코로나19 사망자가 8월 4일까지 8만8천300여 명에 달할 것으로 추산했습니다.

이 기구의 한 보건 전문가는 “브라질의 상황은 아직 갈 길이 멀다”면서 “매우 우려스러운 상황”이라고 말했습니다.

현재 브라질의 확진자 수는 37만여 명으로 미국 다음으로 많고, 사망자는 2만3천여 명으로 세계에서 여섯 번째로 많습니다.

범미보건기구는 또 코로나19 환자에게 말라리아 치료제인 하이드록시클로로퀸을 사용하는 문제에 대해서도 브라질 정부에 거듭 신중한 자세를 주문했습니다.

이에 대해 브라질 정부는 여전히 이 약의 사용을 확대하겠다는 입장에서 한 발자국도 물러서지 않을 태세입니다.
